Three Reasons to Keep Your Tires Properly Inflated

There is a lot to pay attention to when maintaining your car. Drivers should check their oil, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and power steering fluid every so often to make sure these vital components will operate at full capacity.

tire pressureAnother incredibly important maintenance task is checking a car’s tire pressure. Having the proper level of air pressure in your tires can make a significant difference in the car’s performance. Underinflated tires are more likely to hydroplane in rainy conditions and wear out much faster than tires that are correctly maintained. Keeping your tires inflated to the correct air pressure can:

  • Increase the vehicle’s fuel economy by up to three percent
  • Improve the car’s handling
  • Reduce the rate of tread deterioration, lengthening tire lifespans

Checking your tire pressure and filling them with air is relatively easy to do and typically costs a quarter. Most gas stations have machines for letting air into tires that include gauges that read your tire pressure. If you are unsure of what level to fill them up to, the information is usually located on the edge of one of the vehicle’s front doors. It will be a figure measured in psi, or “pounds per square inch.”

Because of all the benefits of keeping your tires inflated and the drawbacks of not doing so, all drivers should make an effort to maintain their tire pressure.
